MicuFilm Ltda. is an audiovisual production company specialized in animation, motion graphics and transmedia strategies founded in Colombia in 2012 by Karolina Villarraga, designer and filmmaker joined by her animated trael partner Carlos Azcuaga, mexican filmmaker, and by the colombian entrepeneur Jaime Villarraga, partner and founder of IED-VITAL.

Karolina Villarraga
CEO – Director

Filmmaker and graphic designer from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. She presented the animated documentary “Fotosensible” as her thesis, alongside Jenny Fonseca, which won Best Documentary at the In Vitro Visual Awards in Bogotá in 2006.

After graduatin from college, she worked as Art Director at Jaguar Taller Digital, production company she later became a partner of, and where she designed the characters for the acclaimed “Pequeñas Voces” by Jairo Carrillo and Óscar Andrade, awarded the India Catalina at the Festival Internacional de Cartagena de Indias 2011, and nominated for the “Lion of the Future” award at the Venezia Film Festival, with screenings at the European Film Market 2010 in Berlin.

She then moved to New York to study photography at the School of Visual Arts. On her return, she was appointed Graphics Coordinator at GENTV channel 8, part of Caracol TV Network broadcast in Miami.

In 2009, she traveled to Barcelona to earn her Masters in Animation at Universitat Pompeu Fabra, where she developed the original idea for “Migrópolis”, the short film she would present as her Masters thesis with Carlos Azcuaga and Anna Rovira. After international acclaim, the short would become the pilot for the 2012 tv series, co-produced by Hierro Animación and RTVC Señalcolombia, which she co-directed with Azcuaga as well.

At the same time, she has worked as an independent filmmaker for clients such as Sesame Street at different times, developing original concepts and producing finished animation fro broadcast. Nowadays, she serves as CEO and runs Micufilm from Barcelona, Spain.

Cha Azcuaga

Animator and filmmaker from the Universidad Iberoamericana, with a Masters in Animation from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain.

As his graduation project, he worked in the animated documentary “Migrópolis”, directed by Karolina Villarraga, which later became an award-winning TV series in Colombia, which he co-directed with Villarraga and was produced by Hierro Animación and RTVC Señalcolombia.

In 2012, he co-founded Micufilm, for which he develops and directs animated projects in Mexico City, among them the animated documentary “En Calle”, co-produced by Sólo Ayuda, and several short films, including the award-winning “Fuimos Colores” with Marcos Almada Rivero, commisioned by Canal 22, the children’s films “Martín el Granito de Sal” and “El Secreto de Cuatro Ciénegas” and most recently two films commissioned by Global Dialogues, “Otras Sonrisas” and “Colourmakers”. He also directed the animation in “El Ruiseñor y la Noche”, feature documentary film directed by Rubén Rojo Aura.

As well as his independent work as character animator, he teaches at the Universidad Iberoamericana and the University of the Incarnate Word, while teaching independent courses on Animation History. He is also a member of the International Jury for Global Dialogues and writes sporadically for MINCHO Magazine.
